Many people are unsure of the differences between Plasma TV’s, LCD TV’s and LED TV’s or panels. Plasma & LCD TV’s, LED TV’s have built in High Definition Television Tuners and interactive functions where panels do not. Panels are mainly used in commercial applications.
Plasma TV’s use a different technology to LCD’s and LED’s. Plasma TV’s have pixels made up of a plasma module, which consists of a gas, which is lit to create an image. LCD and LED TV’s consist of a Liquid Crystal Display module to make up the pixel, they are lit in different ways, an LCD TV is lit with a light, where an LED TV is lit with an LED (Light Emitting Diode), hence allowing it to have higher contrast ratios than both plasma and LCD and making it more energy efficient.
3D TV is available in Plasma, LCD and LED. With a new 3D TV you will still have the ability to watch normal TV as you will have the capability to simply switch on and off the 3D function, you will however be required to wear special 3D glasses (not required for normal viewing) that will be supplied by your Television manufacturer as glasses are specially matched to the type of 3D technology used by each manufacturer. Each manufacturer may choose a different way to apply their 3D format to their TV models.
LCD’s and LED’s are not prone to screen burn like plasmas. Screen burn is often caused by a static image being in the same place on the screen. Manufacturers have taken steps to prevent this occurring by building in screensavers and other technologies and you can virtually eliminate the danger by not leaving still images on the screen and reducing your contrast setting to 50 percent or less.
Life span, the number of viewing hours a television provides before dimming to half the brightness, is one of the biggest advantages LCD/LED have over plasma. Though the numbers vary among the different brands, plasma displays generally offer around 20,000 hours, while LCD’s and LED’s last for up to 50,000 hours and above. You must also take into account that these new technologies are designed for up to five years use, by this time you would want to upgrade yet again to the newest technology available.
Warranties of LCD’s, LED’s and Plasmas range from one to three years depending on brand, with extended warranties also available.
