Plasma versus LCD
Many people are unsure of the differences between Plasma TV's, LCD TV's and
panels. Plasma & LCD TV's have built in Television Tuners, where panels do not.
As a general rule of thumb plasmas deliver better home-theatre performance than
LCD's. This is mainly because LCD TVs typically do not display black as well as
plasmas, but rather black looks more dark grey. This decreases the amount of
detail you can see in the shadows and ultimately leaves the picture looking less
three-dimensional. Refresh rates are also slower in LCD's but technology is
constantly improving and making this less of an issue than it once was.
LCD's are not prone to screen burn like plasmas. Screen burn is often caused by
a static image being in the same place on the screen. Manufacturers have taken
steps to prevent this occurring by building in screensavers and other
technologies and you can virtually eliminate the danger by not leaving still
images on the screen and reducing your contrast setting to 50 percent or less.
Life span, the number of viewing hours a television provides before dimming to
half the brightness, is one of the biggest advantages LCD has over plasma.
Though the numbers vary among the different brands, plasma displays generally
offer around 20,000 hours, while LCD's last for up to 50,000 hours. You must
also take into account that these new technologies are designed for up to five
years use, by this time you would want to upgrade yet again to the newest
technology available.
Overall plasma technology is better for TV viewing & home theatre and LCD
technology is better for computer viewing.
Warranties of LCD's and plasmas range from two to five years depending on brand,
with extended warranties also available.
